Opportunities for Faith Groups

The foundation of Habitat for Humanity was built on the faith community, and the inspiration behind the Habitat model began long before its establishment in 1976. Millard and Linda Fuller, surrounded by hardships and inequality, believed that God did not intend poverty, slums or injustice for any living being. With their deep-rooted faith, the Fullers recognized their calling to correct these issues and took powerful action. Now, nearly 40 years later, churches, congregations, mosques, temples and people of all faiths still come together to create a world in which everyone has a decent place to live.

There are a few ways that faith groups can immediately join DC Habitat in our dedication to eliminating substandard housing and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action in the District.

Lend a hand on our construction sites to help build houses. Skilled and unskilled workers are welcome. Volunteer to work in the Habitat office or by feeding a troop of hard-working volunteers at a work site.

Support Habitat through fundraising and offerings – Fund our work through designated collections, special events or mission budget. You are also funding our work through scheduling a group build day.

Pray continually for the work of Habitat; for our partner families, donors, and for the safety of staff and volunteers on our construction sites.

Help identify and reach out to prospective applicants to our homeownership program. Promote our services, events and activities via your bulletins, newsletters, and website. Learn more about our program requirements in the Become a Homeowner section.

**We are open to hearing new thoughts and ideas about how, together, we can reach out to DC families in need of decent, affordable housing.

Other Opportunities

While DC Habitat is most well-known for volunteer-built homes, non-construction volunteers play just as important a role. Volunteers like you help us reach our organization’s short-term and long-term goals throughout the year. We offer many opportunities for volunteers with various skill sets, from administrative support and photography to faith relations outreach.
