Steps to Home Ownership

Orientation Session
Orientation sessions are scheduled only when DC Habitat is prepared to select new homebuyers. This workshop provides an opportunity for interested applicants to learn about details of the program and to receive initial application materials, which includes an authorization to check credit reports ($15 fee/applicant).

Application
Applications are available only to those who have already attended an orientation session. To complete your application, you must gather and submit various required documents to the DC Habitat office, including but not limited to proof of income, W-2 forms, and verifications of rental and employment history.

The Family Selection Committee will only review complete applications that are submitted in a timely fashion. Those who best fit DC Habitat’s requirements will receive a home visit conducted by two Family Selection Committee members. Based upon the application and the home visit, the Family Selection Committee will identify the most qualified applicants and present them to the DC Habitat Board of Directors for consideration. The committee will notify all applicants of the results.

Partnership and Purchase
At this stage, selected applicants will be granted “conditional approval” for homeownership. Homebuyer candidates are assigned a Family Partner volunteer, who serves as a guide and advocate throughout the process. Prior to move-in, candidates must fulfill the following commitments:

  1. Complete a minimum of 300 hours of “sweat equity” toward the construction of the homes, 150 of which may be contributed by friends and family.
  2. Attend required homeowner education classes, designed to inform and empower participants as homeowners and consumers.
  3. Maintain the required minimum credit score.
  4. Provide a $500 down payment.
  5. Pay closing costs at time of purchase.
