Where We Build
Since Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. was founded in 1988, we’ve built decent, affordable homes in all four quadrants of the District, helping to shelter more than 300 D.C. residents. DC Habitat has built and renovated more than 200 homes around the District of Columbia. This map shows the locations of all sites on which we’ve built since our founding:

In 2010, DC Habitat began construction on new affordable homes in the Ivy City neighborhood of Northeast Washington. Construction has begun on 6 new units and 6 rehabs on and around Providence Street, and plans are underway for creation of at least 16 additional units in the same area. These 2 and 3-bedroom homes will be sold to families in need who are willing and able to partner with DC Habitat.
We are one of four developers that were awarded land grants from the District, along with funds from the first round of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program, to produce more than 50 units of mixed income housing in the Ivy City community.
Additionally, DC Habitat is building passive townhomes in this community, using and expanding upon what we learned during our participation in the 2011 Solar Decathlon. These highly energy efficient houses will offer families significant reductions in the costs required to maintain them, in addition to many other benefits.
A largely industrial area in the central portion of Northeast Washington, Ivy City has long faced great challenges. It is one of the city’s oldest and smallest communities – and home to a collection of houses dating back more than one hundred years. Along its triangular borders are the Amtrak Ivy City Yard/New York Avenue Northeast, Gallaudet University and the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The neighborhood is also a short distance from the newly revitalized Atlas District (H Street Northeast), teeming with new restaurants, bars and other businesses.
Ivy City was the Washington, DC site for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project 2010.
56th Place, Deanwood
In the spring of 2013, DC Habitat breaks ground on six new single-family homes at 56th Place and Clay Place in the Deanwood community of Northeast DC.
This new development site is near to our previously completed 54-unit development in the same neighborhood. These 3-bedroom, 1.5 bath homes will each feature 1-car garages and 1,260 square feet of living space.
In early 2011 DC Habitat completed a 53-home development in Northeast Washington’s Deanwood neighborhood. The homes are built on a tract of land provided by the District of Columbia, commonly referred to as the “Northeast Parcel.”
We averaged a 10-home per year pace of construction in this development comprised of three-bedroom, semi-detached style homes. Each unit has a kitchen, living room, and one bathroom. A few of the homes have basements.
Though the original 53 units are now complete, DC Habitat may look to build other new homes in the Deanwood neighborhood at some point in the future.
