How We Work

Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. sells homes to families who are ineligible for conventional financing. Together with our non-profit partners, we offer low-interest first mortgages and no-interest gap financing on the below market value of the homes we build.

Prospective homeowners make a down payment of approximately $500 and contribute 300 hours of sweat equity towards construction of their own home. Mortgage payments on completed homes are reinvested in a revolving Fund for Humanity to finance further construction and the acquisition of additional properties and building materials.

Since our founding in 1988, we have completed more than 100 homes and renovated 75 low-income cooperative units in the District of Columbia. We are grateful for the over 4,000 volunteers a year who have contributed toward the construction of these homes.
