AmeriCorps National: Volunteer Services Coordinator
GOAL : This AmeriCorps position will help DC Habitat reach its goal of ensuring the best possible volunteer experience is obtained. The Volunteer Coordinator will be able to work with volunteers, ensuring adequate numbers and supervision from volunteer Crew Leaders for each build day.
In addition, the AmeriCorps member will help to organize the growing volunteer services department and increase the number of volunteers, as well as develop new relationships with undeveloped groups. Finally, the affiliate will be working to show an image of excellence as a nonprofit and volunteer institution. This member role will help to reach that goal with their daily service.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement system/mechanism for assessing current and new volunteer skills and networking connections match these with DC HFH’s specific needs.
- Improve “resource database” with contact info for who can assist with certain needs
- Develop new and revise old volunteer recognition tools
- Devise and implement volunteer experience survey
- Continue existing and develop new partnerships with community businesses and organizations to provide in-kind donations for collegiate challenge, volunteer picnic and other volunteer services
- Work with construction staff to fulfill daily tasks needed to ensure successful volunteer build day: filling water containers, signing volunteers in, providing orientation and safety briefing, helping to put away tools with volunteers at end of day, ordering necessary volunteer supplies
- Schedule and communicate affiliate needs with all individual, Crew Leader, Campus Chapter and Collegiate Challenge volunteers
- Conduct on-site orientation and safety talk for group volunteers to better inform all volunteer
- Train volunteers, AmeriCorps members and staff to give on-site orientation
- Work with Family Services Coordinator to track partner family sweat equity
- Maintain Google calendar
- Track volunteer demographic information
- Build on construction site 20 – 30 percent of time to make sure the member has understanding of tasks volunteers are asked to participate in
- Help construction staff with volunteer logistics and supervise small groups of volunteers in simple construction tasks
- Enhance volunteer experience by engaging with volunteers at all construction sites throughout the day, gaining feedback through personal connection and follow up survey/emails/social media
- Communicate daily with Volunteer Services Supervisor and each construction site supervisor to plan for following day
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED; Four-year higher education degree preferred
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien
- Demonstrated ability to work alone and as part of a team
- Detail oriented
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Experience with and passion for Habitat for Humanity preferred

AmeriCorps VISTA Position: Corporate Sponsorship Development
GOAL : To help DC Habitat development staff to launch a new fundraising campaign targeting high-level corporate sponsors (Starts in fall 2013)
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To research new corporate sponsorship prospects and collect comprehensive data for use by development staff
- To assist development staff in creating new corporate sponsorship materials/templates for materials
- To implement first year data from DC Habitat’s outcomes study into some of the new sponsorship materials/templates
- Assist development staff in highlighting both new and legacy corporate partners through a variety of communications vehicles (enhanced website content, social media, press outreach/events, etc.)
- Help development staff form a plan to recruit new corporate sponsors for the major annual fundraising event; help develop an event program that appeals to corporate sponsors and offers them a high-level of recognition
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED; Four-year higher education degree preferred

AmeriCorps National: Family Servies Coordinator
GOAL: In 2011, DC Habitat more than doubled its building capacity to building 10 homes. Since the fall of 2010, the Family Services Department has been served by just one full-time staff person. The past year saw the dissolution of our volunteer committee, which has left families lacking support and leadership during the homebuying process. We also experienced a marked decline in the capacity to connect with local organizations in our homebuyer outreach efforts. In 2012, our affiliate received a Family Services member and were able to re-build our outreach efforts in the community, and re-develop our volunteer partner committee. Looking ahead, our affiliate plans to add nearly 30 homes to our portfolio. A member would directly contribute to this target by continuing with outreach and selection, while revitalizing and maintaining the key components of DC Habitat’s partnership program.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Expand outreach and selection efforts to match increasing number of available homeownership opportunities
- Establish new relationships with local organizations, including area schools, places of worship, and community centers. Organizations such as these serve as platforms to connect with prospective homebuyers in the communities in which we’re building and can also provide the physical space necessary for hosting informational sessions
- Ensure that the affiliate is reaching all eligible populations, such as veterans, the Latino community, and persons with disabilities and that all are equally familiar with Habitat’s program and available opportunities
- Obtain translations of marketing materials and key partnership documents in non-English languages widely spoken in DC, such as Spanish and Amharic
- Implement criminal background check policy in relation to family selection
- Restore volunteer partner program: Screen interested volunteers based on applicable skills and availability
- Provide appropriate training on such topics as Fair Housing Laws and DC-specific financing options
- Establish a timeline and process to match each newly approved homebuyer candidate with a trained volunteer partner
- Act as Housing Services represtenative at the Family Services Committee
- Assist in screening housing applicants according to affiliat’s policies and procedures
- Meet with applicants in the incubator program and follow each applicants progress
- Develop neighborhood guides in concert with volunteer partners. These guides shall include information on area services to help homeowners better familiarize themselves with new community
- Must be willing to have a flexible schedule with occasionally working evenings and some Saturdays.

AmeriCorps National Direct – Construction Crew Leader
GOALS: The construction crew leader AmeriCorps member will help to increase the number of volunteers on the construction site and therefore increase the productivity and amount of homes built each year. In addition, this role will help give construction site supervisors time to better assess the building schedule, asses materials used and therefore cut down on cost and increase efficiency. This member will work toward closing the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative in the Ivy City neighborhood, building most of the last 11 new construction units in this 27 home development area. In addition, the member will help build six new construction units, three of which will be dedicated to veteran homeowners. What’s more, the AmeriCorps will help families directly by leading volunteers in the construction of Earthcraft, LEED and six passive solar housing units that will give partner families the opportunity to save immensely on their monthly utility bills.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leaders will be used to lead and teach volunteers on our construction sites.
- Serve on the DC Habitat construction site from 7:30 – 4:00pm, Tuesday – Saturday each week.
- Train and supervise teams of unskilled volunteers, including homeowner candidates, in specific tasks required for construction of DC Habitat homes and maintenance of the construction site. We expect approximately 6000 volunteers to participate in calendar year 2014.
- Perform hands-on construction and site maintenance on DC Habitat work sites.
- Understand and retain knowledge of green building aspects after training sessions.
- Train potential volunteer Crew Leaders and provide feedback to staff.
- Learn and host morning orientation and safety briefing with volunteers when needed.
- Attend team activities, including local orientation, weekly meetings, trainings, teambuilding days, and team retreats.
- Promote an ethic of service on the construction site by encouraging volunteers and other team members and promoting DC Habitat’s mission of building decent, affordable housing.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED
- Bachelor’s or higher education degree preferred
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien and have a valid driver’s license
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and communicate with diverse groups of people
- Experience with Habitat or construction preferred, but not required (All AmeriCorps members receive on-site training in construction skills)
- Interest in affordable housing and community development
- Passionate for the mission of Habitat for Humanity
- Experience with driving pickup trucks, bobcat machinery and lawn mowers preferred
- Good communication and leadership skills
- Patience
- Ability to lift and carry tools and building materials weighing at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to operate basic tools, such as hammers, power saws, and drills (instruction will be provided)
- Ability to work in all safe weather conditions, from severe cold to extreme heat.
- Ability to be on one’s feet for extended periods of time
- Ability to work on ladders and heights of up to two-stories
