DC Habitat Needs Your SupportKids

DC Habitat for Humanity needs your help urgently.

Fall is the busiest time for our building program and we try to finish as many homes as we can in time for Christmas.  Unfortunately, several of our funding sources have been redirected to support rebuilding efforts on the Gulf Coast, leaving DC Habitat for Humanity with a temporary problem:

We cannot buy the materials we need to complete six houses which we hoped to finish by Christmas.

That means six families who had dreamed of their first ever Christmas in their own home will be spending yet another Christmas in an overcrowded, unsafe and unhealthy low-income rental unit.

We are reaching out to all of our friends in the community and asking them to dig deep and make a special gift so that we can get our building back on schedule.   I hope you will consider a donation to help us give people in need a decent place to raise their families.

To make a gift, follow the link below or mail your check payable to DC Habitat to:

Welcome our new AmeriCorps Volunteers!

DC Habitat is pleased to welcome five new AmeriCorps members to our construction site.  These members, Chris, Luke, Courtney, Scott, and Mary Olive will serve as Construction Crew Leaders, teaching our construction volunteers and ensuring their safety on the site.  In addition, we are happy to have Darci Palmer back for a second AmeriCorps year to serve in the volunteer services department.  Darci will be helping to create a new volunteer crew leader program in addition to other projects to help DC Habitat better use volunteers to increase our overall capacity. AmeriCorps members bring youth and vitality to our organization and we are pleased to have this grant continued for the 2007-08 year.

Citi

For more than a century, Citi has been part of the fabric of thousands of communities around the world. With this presence comes a responsibility to create a positive impact in those communities through community and small business development, microfinance, and nonprofit capacity building. In 2006, the Citi Foundation made a grant to sponsor a DC Habitat home and renewed its support again this year, with an additional half-house sponsorship.  In addition to their financial support that helps build and strengthen our community, Citi also provides volunteers to help DC Habitat build homes. We appreciate the many ways Citibank helps DC Habitat help our community.

GEICO takes pride in being one of the nation's fastest growing auto insurance companies, but they are equally proud of the work they do outside their office walls. Part of GEICO's corporate mission is to encourage active, involved citizenship. GEICO associates read, build, mentor, walk, run, coach - whatever it takes to help organizations and people in need.

Through GEICO Corporate Community Citizens (GCCC), associates contribute to, and participate in a variety of activities, like building a DC Habitat home. More than 2,000 associates volunteer an average of five hours a week helping many worthwhile organizations.  We are grateful to GEICO employees for their hard work on August 11 and the company's $5,000 to sponsor their Team Building Day.

On July 21, ITT Advanced Engineering and Sciences sponsored a Team Building Day with a $5,000 donation and brought a team to our construction site in northeast Washington to help DC Habitat help more families leave the cycle of poverty behind through homeownership.  ITT seeks ways to provide their employees with experiences that challenge their minds and their spirits. After working with DCHFH, employees unanimously said that they enjoyed the
team building and the feeling of accomplishment and felt that they made a difference.

Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, ITT Advanced Engineering & Sciences (AES) is an engineering and science company, providing leading-edge technology services and products to government, industrial, and commercial customers.

Finn macCools was, well, cool!
Aug HH
Our August happy hour packed Finn macCools with Habitat volunteers and friends enjoying door prizes, drink and appetizer specials, games including foosball, pool and shuffle board, football and baseball games on 3 big screen TV's. PR Committee Chair Shaily Jariwala, pictured above left with excited door prize winners, rocked the megaphone and added to the fun. Did you miss the excitement? Make sure to mark your calendars for the upcoming happy hour at Ventnor's Sports Cafe in Adams Morgan Friday, October 19.
