DC Habitat Reaches a Landmark

Earlier this month, DC Habitat began building our 100th house.  Volunteers and DC Habitat homeowner partners who bought their DC Habitat home as long as 15 years ago turned out for the occasion.

Homeowner Karen Gay who bought her home in 1996 said, "I just wanted to help another family have a home like so many people helped me.  Having a home of my own has made the biggest difference in my life."

The 100th house is a landmark for every Habitat affiliate and we couldn't be more excited.  Plus, instead of having a corporation sponsor this house, we decided to honor the individuals like you who are the backbone of DC Habitat.  This will be the "people's house," sponsored entirely by people like you.

We are asking friends of DC Habitat to contribute $100 or more to sponsor the 100th house and hope you will help us mark this milestone in DC Habitat's history.   Of course, gifts of $25 and $50 add up to hundreds quickly, so please help us with what you are able.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Team Build
PwC

June 12 - 15, PwC professionals in the fields of assurance, tax, human resources, transactions, performance improvement and crisis management tackled some new skill sets on the DC Habitat construction site.

More than 150 PricewaterhouseCoopers employees volunteered as part of a company-wide Community Service Month.  During the month of June, thousands of PwC employees from offices across the U.S. volunteer in their communities as part of their annual month of community service. From walk-a-thons and new home construction to community clean-ups and educational instruction, PwC employees donate thousands of hours over thirty days to help inspire change.  DC Habitat was delighted to be the recipient of the local office's hard work and the company's generous $20,000 donation to help provide the building supplies needed during the week of service.

Building More Than Houses
wedding

On June 9th, Amanda Phillips and Brendon Fox were married in a ceremony at the Phillips family home in Hamilton, New York.

Many DC Habitat volunteers will remember Amanda and Brendon as site supervisors.  Both came to DC Habitat with AmeriCorps, the volunteers who spend a year with us in a remarkable personal commitment to improving America's communities.  Amanda continued with DC Habitat as a staff construction supervisor after her time in AmeriCorps ended.  The relationship the couple built while building houses was solemnized in a ceremony witnessed by family, many of their AmeriCorps teammates, DC Habitat volunteers and Executive Director Carol Casperson.

Amanda and Brendon made a contribution to DC Habitat to commemorate the occasion and the organization that brought them together.
Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

Volunteers and DC Habitat homeowners gathered at our construction site in Northeast DC for the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic on Saturday, June 2nd.

Good food, fun games and raffle prizes courtesy of Go Mama Go! helped make it a great day.  Volunteer of the year, Dennis Smythe (pictured below with Executive Director Carol Casperson), was honored for his almost 20 years of participation with DC Habitat.  Dennis started his relationship with Habitat as a construction volunteer and is currently a member of the Board of Directors.
