December 8th Dedications
We Welcomed the Bundy, Morgan, McManus
and Lewis Families to Their New DC Habitat Homes |

The Lewis Family
The Bundy Family The McManus Family
On December 8, 2007 more than a hundred friends, family members and volunteers joined DC Habitat to dedicate four new homes. Representatives from the sponsor companies that funded the building of the homes were the featured speakers: Mike Schwartz, Director of Community Relations at Freddie Mac; Robert Grealy Area Vice President for Equity Residential; and Paul Thornell, who is a member of DC Habitat's board of directors as well as Vice President for Federal Government Affairs at Citigroup. Yvette Alexander, Ward 7 Council Member, was also on hand to welcome the happy homeowners. These were the first DC Habitat homes to be outfitted with additional energy saving elements like compact florescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats and aerating shower heads, and Ben Bixby of Earth Aid Enterprises, joined us to talk about the items his company donated and his plan to retrofit all 100 DC Habitat homes with additional energy saving items.

Each of the families was delighted to be able to spend Christmas in their very own home, far from their previous residences in a dilapidated public housing complex. Habitat families contribute 300 hours of "sweat equity" to building their homes and those of their Habitat neighbors.
The four homes dedicated December 8th are part of a 53-home community DC Habitat is building in Northeast Washington. Habitat homes are built by volunteers to help keep them affordable. The average DC Habitat homeowner makes $26,000 annually - approximately 30% of area median income. Habitat homes are sold on a zero-interest, no-profit, 25-year mortgage financed by DC Habitat.
In Her Own Words: New Homeowner Shareen Bundy
I just want to say thank to my lord and savoir Jesus Christ, for if it wasn't for him none of this would be possible. I can't put into words what I feel but I will try.
I am happy, so happy that I can call 342 55th St "home". That has a nice sound to it. Home. I prayed for a chance to give my family a comfortable home. A chance for a better life. A chance to have what every American wants: the security of having their own home.
In today's time it is extremely difficult to buy a home, especially if you are at an average or below average income. And the prospect of owning you own home is very slim. So when I heard about DC Habitat for Humanity's program I was ecstatic. They explained to me what I needed to do and I put the game plan into action.
I never thought I would be putting up dry wall or framing and putting in windows. But there I was framing, cutting and I even climbed a ladder ( thanks to Andrew [AmeriCorps construction supervisor]). But I didn't mind the hard work because Psalm 128:2 says: You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.
I just want to say thank you to the Habitat staff -- Mary, Carol, Bachir, Nancy, Amanda, Andrew aka incredible Hawk, Vance and Teresa, my family partner Katie and all of the habitat staff and the AmeriCorps staff as well. They helped me build, process paperwork, gave words of encouragement or just listened when I needed to talk. Habitat is a one of a kind program that lives on the word of God. 1 Thessalonians 1:3: We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
To me HABITAT stands for Heavenly, Angels, Bringing Inspiration To All They Can. I have met so many wonderful people who have given their time to help someone else. So I would like to thank the Sponsors, and the volunteers who have contributed so much. Lastly, my family and friends, Ricardo, Sonia, LaMont, Sherri and others, who came out weekend after weekend, prayed for me, and gave me a word of encouragement when times were tough. You have been there through all the rough times in my life and I am so proud to share this happy occasion with you. You will never know how much you have meant to me.
And to my children who are the biggest reason why I can stand here today. Mommy loves you. This is for you. With all that having been said, there is only one more thing to say.
Hello my name is Shareen Bundy, welcome to my home. |

We Need to Get More Families Into Decent Homes.
Will you help?
Thousands of children are condemned to living in unsafe, unhealthy and overcrowded conditions because there is simply not enough affordable housing available in our area.
With your help, DC Habitat is changing that. Your donations help us buy the construction materials we need to build affordable, energy-efficient homes for people in need.

| No Hard Hats in Sight at O Street Mansion
We traded our hard hats for high heels November 27th at a very sophisticated evening of cocktails and hors d' oeuvres at the fabulous and funky Mansion on O Street near Dupont Circle. The silent auction raised more than $5,000. Many thanks to lead volunteer Jackie Paranzino and her crew, to O Street for providing the gorgeous venue, and to all of those who donated items to the auction.

First Ladies brave the icy morning to begin interviews at 5:00am
Habitat affiliates in each state have hosted First Families builds over the past two years. The First Families program came to a successful conclusion with a final event and build in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 28, 2007.
As part of the event, DC Habitat hosted a satellite media tour (SMT) from the build site early in the morning. The main attractions were the spouses of several Governors, including Anne Holton of Virginia; Jinkx Holton, former First Lady of Virginia; Sally Ganem of Nebraska; and Karen Baldacci of Maine. Interviews by First Ladies and other build participants were broadcast to TV stations all over America. After the SMT, the First Ladies lent a hand on construction.
Thanks
.... to homeowner Keith Bundy for designating DC Habitat for Humanity to receive his $500 award for being Holiday Inn Capital's Employee of the Year. Congratulations Keith!
... to Mr. Henry's Restaurant on Capitol Hill for generously providing a fun and a delicious dinner for our volunteers from The College of New Jersey! Fourteen students from TCNJ arrived January 13 to work on the Northeast parcel for one week as part of Collegiate Challenge 2008.
