Family Selection

Members of this committee play a major role in deciding who lives in DC Habitat homes. Some of the volunteers bring expertise in mortgage lending and social services; others bring their organizational skills to help applicants complete their applications. They conduct orientation sessions for those interested in homeownership. This committee screens applications and visit homes of prospective homeowners. And they determine which families should be presented to the DC Habitat board as eligible for homeownership. The board usually follows the committee's recommendations, says DC Habitat staffer Patricia Pugh, because "the family selection committee does all the footwork."

"The ultimate reward for me has been to participate in a ceremony where a new Habitat homeowner - one that I helped to select - received the key to their new home. That makes the work all worth while."
—Christine Elias, chair of Family Selection committee
