President, DC Habitat for Humanity

Background:

Habitat for Humanity – Washington, D.C. (DCHFH), is a private, faith-based, non-profit organization founded in 1988 and an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The organization works to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness in the nation's capital by building affordable, energy- and resource-efficient homes for God's people in need. DC Habitat for Humanity builds and sells homes to families who do not qualify for conventional financing, offering no-profit, no-interest, and 25- year mortgages for our buyers. Each year, DC Habitat recruits thousands of volunteers and sponsors from schools, corporations, faith-based institutions to build new homes for low-income families who work along with staff and volunteers.

The Position: 

DC Habitat is seeking an energetic, creative, and dedicated leader as President to take this vital organization to the next level. The successful candidate will be a highly intelligent self-starter who can advocate effectively for affordable housing in Washington, D.C. while taking the organization to the next level by significantly increasing and sustaining the number of affordable homes built each year. The candidate must share the vision, values and standards of Habitat for Humanity. The President should have experience in a similar or related environment, especially in the areas of affordable housing, community assistance and advocacy. In addition, the person must be mindful of how organizations such as DC Habitat function at the national, state and local levels.

The new President must be able to skillfully represent the organization in the community, work with and support families that are homeowners and homebuyers, build partnerships and lobby on behalf of DC Habitat and its constituents. Experience in Board development and organizational strategic planning is important. The President is responsible for overseeing all operations and staff, building and maintaining relationships with individuals, foundations and corporate donors and must be able to provide direction and leadership to accomplish DC Habitat short- and long-term fundraising goals. The successful candidate will work closely with the Board and staff to promote an open and inclusive environment that emphasizes cooperation and teamwork. In addition, the best person will be intelligent, diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment and interpersonal skills.

DC Habitat’s budget for 2007 is approximately $2.9 million with a staff of 11. The affiliate completed 8 houses in calendar year 2007.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree is required; advanced study or degree is preferred.
  • At least ten years of increasingly responsible leadership experience in either the public, private or nonprofit sectors.
  • A deep understanding of affordable housing issues and ability to work with the key stakeholders in the local communities, corporations and government.
  • Ability to create constructive partnerships through consensus building.
  • A demonstrated record of leadership and success in strategic planning, organizational development and problem solving.
  • Knowledge and practice in fundraising, finances and program development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Experience with managing large groups of volunteers.
  • A strong commitment to the needs of low-income families and prospective Habitat homeowners.
